The Photographs

The film unfolds across three worlds: Leningrad, Paris, and the black-and-white photos of Robert Doisneau.

In the 1930s, newlyweds Sasha and Zdenka are arrested and sent to the Gulag over a false denunciation. Sasha dies first, followed by his wife, leaving their newborn daughter orphaned.

In the 1990s, university professor Victor and his love, Zdenka—granddaughter of the first—face persecution from Stalin’s lingering influence. Art offers them solace, leading them to Paris, where Zdenka discovers she can step into Doisneau’s photographs.

As reality merges with illusion, the photos become a refuge, ultimately offering Victor and Zdenka an escape—perhaps to another life, another dimension.
